Despite looking like it was designed by an eight year old child and stealing its name from a highly camp 40s cartoon superhero the Mighty Mouse has proved to be a massive hit on the Mac platform. So nearly a year after release Apple contacted the farmer’s wife who’s taken out her carving knife.

The new tail-free edition of the MM can roam wherever it likes (within a 30m radius) thanks to its inbuilt Bluetooth connectivity and it may be paired with any correspondingly equipped Mac or keyboard. Its tracker is similarly space age using laser technology (ok, not that space age but modern at least) and while it holds two AA batteries it can rather cleverly operate using just one.

Other than this the MM remains largely identical to its chained brother with a touch sensitive top shell that detects left and right clicks, has squeezable sides which can be used to launch programmes and the famous ‘Scroll Ball’ (I prefer Lid Nipple) that enables 360 degree scrolling.

The catch is our free running MM needs Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later to operate and the £49 asking price isn’t exactly loose change either. At present there is no Windows support (though this could change in time as it did with the original MM) but we enslaved Microsoftians have cool kit from Logitech and the like anyway.

According to the Apple UK site, the de-tailed Mighty Mouse will be ready to ship in five to seven days and if you’re prepared to splash the cash it looks a worthy investment. Be careful of its amorous ways though, it has already usurped its corded cousin in our superhero toon’s heart.
