We first saw Japanese cuttings about this in January but it was so completely crazy we never thought it would get a UK release. How wrong we were…

Released by the usually conservative and, at the very least, sane Sony the VN-CX1 is a peripheral that combines two obvious stable-mates: the mouse and phone (!?!).

Billed as a ‘Skype Mouse’ it looks like a usual minimalist input rodent but should the front mounted LED start blinking you’ve got a call so flip it open clamshell style to reveal a retro phone complete with speaker, mic and volume control.

At just 45.5 x 23.9 x 89.2mm and 67 grams the VN-CX1 is small enough to cart around with you too – a time when Skype is often at its most handy. Of course, there is one major fly in the ointment here: don’t we actually like to USE our computers while talking on Skype? Whether it is surfing the net to send web links to our conversation partner or simply doing other things because, quite frankly, they’re boring… With the VN-CX1 we’d be trapped, non-multi-tasking and that, my friends, is so un-21st Century.

That said, if you’re a safe and steady type who still likes to open one browser window and one application at a time the VN-CX1 could be for you, and it won’t cost the earth with a £55 RRP when it sweet talks its way onto shelves in March.
