SD On Menu For Sony Mouse

It had to happen sooner or later, what with Sony’s digital music players finally supporting MP3s, and now – if it keeps this up – the soon-to-be-former King of Proprietary has opened its gigantic arms to SD Cards too.

The result of this terrifyingly logical and absurdly reasonable development is the SMU-RW610, a Kofi Annan of a mouse whose back opens up car-boot style to reveal a marriage of Capulet (Memory Stick) and Montague (SD Card). Naturally, the Memory Stick gets the top bunk in this welcome arrangement, but SD is just happy to finally get an invite to the party.

In practical terms, both Flash memory types can be used simultaneously and even co-operate to copy data from one format to the other (Ye Gods!). Little top mounted blinking LEDs show when either media is in use.

As for the rest mouse itself, it’s nothing particularly remarkable. It is an Infrared model with left and right buttons and a rather sunken scroll wheel. Given its dual function as a card reader, there’s no surprise in revealing it connects to a PC using USB2.0.

As this stage we don’t know any price details, but Sony Japan says the device will be debuting in its home market in “the next few days” with other markets expected to follow soon afterwards. Incidentally, the Tokyo founded monolith has also revamped its T Series Vaio notebooks to include an SD Card slot, but it is said to be unlikely they ever reach these shores.

In all, I can’t help but be a little stunned at the common sense being show by Sony in recently months. Rumour has it too that the company could even open up UMD (the disc technology used in its PSP). Quite frankly if that happens I’m starting a large crime wave of hat stealing then dinning out on my bounty…
