Shuttle has chosen today to push out its portable, all-in-one, Atom-based X50. The system seems undeniably aimed squarely at the like of Asus' Eee Top and the MSI Neton.

A reasonable 15.6 touchscreen, with a 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution, is the X50's dominant feature, although the sizeable handle up top comes a close second. Powering the X50 is a dual-core, 1.6GHz, Intel Atom 330 accompanied by 1GB of RAM - with 2GB supported - a 160GB hard drive and Intel's older 945G chipset.

A trio of USB ports, a 4-in-1 card reader, gigabit Ethernet and Draft-N wireless make up the X50's connectivity options. Dimensions of 391 x 327 x 36mm are decently compact and a 22dB operating noise level is good.

Neither pricing nor a release date are available yet, but it seems unlikely Shuttle will charge more for the X50 than rival systems once it is available.

if only manufacturers would rid themselves of the belief that everything that comes out of apples headquarters in cupertino as design gospel and 'think differently'

I can't be sure, given the limited photos available, but I have a feeling that handle is also the stand (i.e. it folds down), so it wouldn't really look all that ugly whe... more
