Yes. It's also the obvious argument for anyone who says they don't "need" a credit card.

What about those extended warranties?

@Martin
If the warranties are Insurance based (i.e. you pay for the repair and claim back from the insurance company), then they should be covered by that insurance company, assuming their claim/policy documents have been sent to the customer directly. However, if they are dealer backed (i.e. Return To Base or similar), then you're very probably stuffed.

Don't always need to have used a credit card - Visa Debit cards should be covered as well under the Chargeback scheme.
"Visa regulations allow for banks, on behalf of their cardholders, to seek financial redress from the merchant's bank if the cardholder has bought goods or services that will not be delivered, for example when a merchant ceases trading, or if the goods are not supplied as specified. This applies to goods bought on both Visa credit and Visa debit cards. Cardholders should contact their issuing bank as soon as practical if they face this situation."

A bit more info here in the 'Visa debit card' section

It is a shame they have gone bust. They were always competitive on pricing for most items. I got an amazing deal on my telly! To make matters worse I ordered a microwave on Saturday I hope it still turns up.

I'm led to believe that the Empire warranties which were part of the club scheme was a store warranty and not backed by any insurance. It really does highlight the risk buying from this kind of outlet and the internet and demonstrates why you as a customer should support an established retailer even if the product is slightly more expensive. If you saw the stock levels Empire had and the amount of unfullfilled orders it was looking more and more likely that this Company would cease to trade. Flat panel TV stock in general is very tight at the moment with most manufacturers struggling to meet the demand of the first few weeks of the sales which were generally better than most stores expectations. I really do feel for the staff and how they have been treated by the Empire owners especially looking at their own personal fortunes, perhaps they should endevour to pay their hardworking teams from the Christmas trading period. I wish the staff good luck however not the company or its owners

I ordered a Toshiba TV from Empire Direct 2 weeks a go and I havent received it. I spoke to my credit card company on Tuesday and they told me that I will get my money back. I have since reorderd the TV from digitaldirect.co.uk and they delivered the same TV to me on Friday. Despite being annoyed about the hastle of having to go and order elsewhere I am disappointed that Empire Direct have gone bust because I have been buying from them for about 5 years.

It's probably worth mentioning that if items were bought by credit card & £100 or more in value, it is possible to claim the cost of unreceived goods back from the credit card company...
