Asus Readying Cheaper, Celeron-Powered Eee Box

Asus' Eee Box is set to get an upgrade, of sorts, in an attempt to boost sales apparently. According to DigiTimes, Asus isn't particularly enthralled by the number of systems it has sold. Perhaps, like netbooks, people are finding nettops only fine for an hour of use, but no longer.


The change will see a Celeron 220 processor being used instead of an Atom chip in addition to a 120GB hard drive replacing the previous 80GB offering. Overall that should enable the system to hit a lower price point, specifically NT$7,988 (~£155) or some £30 less than the current Atom model from most online retailers. And, let us not forget, that 1.2GHz Celeron CPU, while drawing more power, is likely to offer better performance than the faster-clocked Atom.

Whether this Celeron-sporting Eee Box will hit the UK is unknown, so we'll just have to wait and see. If Asus is serious about shifting Eee Boxes it seems reasonably safe to assume it'll be peddling its wares wherever possible.

It's not like there is no competition in the small form factor, low-cost, low-power space, now.
