I've expressed my scepticism before about the dilution of the Eee brand but with Eee HDTVs and now ‘Monitors' on the way it doesn't look like Asus will stop milking its cash cow any time soon...

So to the so-called ‘Eee Monitor' and first things first: it isn't really a monitor, it's an All-in-one PC. Why call it a Monitor? Beats me, but let's move on. With indisputable iMac influences, the screen is reported to be between 19in and 20in across with a potential $500 starting price so we're talking entry level here and while the CPU isn't mentioned I think we'd be safe in assuming Asus is sticking to its beloved Intel Atom.

In terms of connectivity there's a lot going on with 6x USB , a card reader, a pair of Ethernet ports (presumably to offer docking station functionality?), line-in and out audio, a mic port and, surprisingly, a lack of VGA or DVI. A TV tuner is rumoured to also be inside (it's likely an option) along with integrated speakers with upmarket Denon branding.

Ultimately, without an official release as yet, there are still a number of ways the Eee Monitor could go and I don't feel comfortable making judgement just yet. It is certainly one of the more curious additions to the bulging Eee family to date however and one we are likely to see a great deal more of in the near future...

Update: It's one Ethernet port and one modem jack on closer inspection - which makes a heck of a lot more sense. What looks like an IR receiver seems tucked in there too. Hmmmmn...
