While a great deal of attention has been lavished on MSI's Wind subnotebook (here are our first impressions and hands on), another major release for the company has largely been overlooked...

Coming hot on the heels of the Asus Eee Box, MSI has also announced the 'Wind PC' - an ultra small desktop (I use the term literally) computer again based on the Intel Atom low power CPU and 945GC chipset. Measuring just 65mm, it is 3x smaller than the average ATX chassis, and emits just 30dB during full operation making it virtually silent.

Energy use is top notch too with MSI claiming the Wind PC consumes a mere 35W when up and running. This compares to around 250W from your average desktop and obviously a heck of a lot more noise.

Sadly MSI hasn't gone on to specify any further details (other than outline its ENERGY STAR compliance and US Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] certification) but I'm hearing it is likely to come with the same Eee Box specs of 1GB RAM, a 160GB HDD, 3/4 USB ports and Windows XP or Linux OS options. Clearly a DVD drive is also in the mix, one in the eye for the Eee Box.

Likely to be a great media centre (apparently 720p is on the menu) the one criticism I'd make of the Wind PC is it isn't as attractive as the Eee Box, but with MSI likely to offer extremely aggressive pricing it could well prove the better option.

Asus must be getting sick of this...
