Having gone into administration earlier this month, Rock's future was fairly uncertain, but at least one of the questions thrown up has been answered: would anyone take the plunge and buy out the brand? The answer turns out to be yes as holding company Stone Group has bought Rock Computers (for an undisclosed sum) in order to strengthen its portfolio.

Stone is a supplier of computer systems to many public sector clients, including schools and the emergency services and says that "by acquiring Rock Computers, Stone has the opportunity to leverage our existing IT manufacturing skills and support resources to develop more specialist Notebook products to meet the demands of some specific verticals in our public sector customer base".

Nick Boardman, Rock's former Chief Executive will be joining Stone's operating board as its mobile technology division director. Boardman commented:

"I am delighted that Stone's backing gives us a tremendous opportunity to build on our market leading credentials in the sector from a much stronger financial base. In particular, for me, it is vital that customers' historic warranties will be supported going forward. Everyone can continue to buy Rock products with confidence".

That existing Rock customers will have their warranties honoured is good news as that was probably the primary concern over the uncertain future of the company. Now all that remains to be seen is exactly what Stone does with its new purchase.
