Mere hours after the Wall Street Journal reported that Dell is planning to drop the XPS line, Alienware has announced that it has a new gaming PC of its own coming soon. Coincidence? I think not!

AMD will be pleased to see that its components are set to adorn the insides of these new PCs. Built around an AMD 790FX motherboard from Asus, the systems will boast a quad-core Phenom X4 9550 processor and not one but two AMD Radeon 3870 X2s. 4GB of RAM is also set to feature inside the system and if we know Alienware (and we do) the components elsewhere, such as the hard drive(s) offered, should be specced to a similar level too.

The twist in the tale here is that unlike many other gaming systems, from both Alienware and its rivals, which are generally priced in the thousands, this machine should actually be fairly budget-friendly. With a suggested price of $1,600-odd (around £800) for this AMD-based Alienware, many consumers will likely be tempted. The problem there, of course, is that the brand could get muddied by expanding its range downwards into the realms of budget systems. Time will tell…
