If you're running a beta copy of Windows Vista then 1. Why? and 2. Things are about to change dramatically.

Three months after it launched the retail version of Vista into the world Microsoft has announced plans to cull all beta copies. Well, perhaps "cull" isn't exactly the right word but it is about to make life extremely unpleasant for those who have chosen not to upgrade.

Starting 31 May copies of Windows Vista beta will begin to reboot every two hours while users will be restricted to base level file retrieval, ie: everything you create from that point onwards will be lost. Short of an automatic hard drive format this is pretty much Microsoft saying "Time's Up!". So I take it back, "cull" is the right word after all.

Still beta 'testers' don't really have a leg to stand on because genuine testers were all given free upgrades to Vista Ultimate at the end of the process. So if you're running Vista beta it's likely you got it over P2P or swiped it from your beta testing mate once he was done with it. Tut, tut.

So the days of Vista beta editions will soon be gone. Roll on the more traditional days of pirated release copies!
