Dell is making quite a habit of listening to its customers since it launched the IdeaStorm website. First it gave the option to strip Windows from new desktops and notebooks, then it agreed to start shipping PCs with Linux. Now it has agreed to restart selling systems with XP.

The decision comes after a suggestion – once again to IdeaStorm – saying "Don't eliminate XP just yet". It garnered nearly 11,000 votes. So much for geeks being obsessed with only the latest and greatest...

Consequently Dell has gone back to the drawing board and decided to offer the choice of Vista or XP (Home and Professional editions) on six systems (currently unspecified) with the potential to expand the offering if it proves popular.

Of course the big question in all this is: Why are users wanting to dump Vista in the first place? There will naturally be niche reasons but clearly many have not been convinced the "Wow Starts Now!"

To be honest, I can understand their complaints. I was initially very impressed by Vista but having run the OS for three months now I'm increasingly frustrated by its restrictiveness, constant prompts for user approval, nagging system notifications and slow driver and application support from developers.

Would I go as far as suggesting new buyers plump for an XP machine? Don't be silly, it's an ageing beast which Microsoft quickly wants to put out to pasture; but I would hold off on buying anything until Microsoft releases the first Vista Service Pack...
