While Mozilla has produced a browser which thoroughly mauls both IE6 and IE7 its email client has yet to enjoy quite the same success, but could things be about to change?

Today Mozilla has launched 'Thunderbird 2' which brings with it a host of new benefits including 'Message Tagging' - use defaults such as 'To-Do', 'Important' or create your own, 'Message History' – which works as in a web browser to simplify organisation and 'Search' – a find-as-you-type search pane.

Like previous incarnations of Thunderbird, TB2 can also automate the integration of popular web mail services by simply entering your user name(s) and password(s), while the open source nature of the client means it is open to the same customisation as Firefox with users creating hundreds of useful tools, add-ons, skins and templates that can be accessed from the Mozilla site and found around the Web.

Available now as a free download for Windows, Mac and Linux in more than 30 languages, Thunderbird 2 provides a welcome alternative to Outlook Express, Windows Mail Desktop, and Mac Mail though I do wish it would integrate a calendar so Mozilla could terrorise Microsoft's bloated Outlook software as well....

In Thunderbird 3 perhaps?

Update: My bad, Mozilla offers Lightening: a calendar add-in for Thunderbird, while it also provides Sunbird: a dedicated calendar app. Thanks for the spot to reader Matt who may have just made many people's lives easier...
