I’ve long thought of Norton products as the software equivalent of a Rolls Royce: they are big, hefty, resource intensive lumps but they do provide you with more features than you will ever need and keep you safe as houses. The good news is Norton seems determined to rid itself of the negative parts of that metaphor.

‘Norton 360’ – which first went out on Public beta in December – has now been officially released and it promises to provide even greater functionality but from within just a single product and with a much reduced drain on system resources.

Called 360 because of it is ‘complete’ solution (not an Xbox add-on), the programme combines its famous anti-virus software with antispyware, firewall, intrusion protection and antiphishing as well as Windows XP/Vista backup and tune up tools. Ultimately it means you should be not only protected from others, but from yourself...

The downside is that – at least at release – the solution surprisingly doesn’t support for either of the Firefox and Opera browsers, which means I’ll be sticking with AVG but expect a patch soon.

Norton 360 is available now online through the Symantec Store where it will set you back $79.99 for a one year subscription which covers three PCs. A more traditional boxed version will also debut in shops next month but you wouldn’t want to kill the trees would you... they’re cuddly (in a rough bark kind of way).
