Since I coined the phrase Hackers’ Christmas on this site two years ago to correspond to the period immediately after a new Microsoft OS release it has become rather a cult saying. It has also become an infinitely true one…

A report this week from APC Magasine (sic) states that Microsoft is rushing out Vista’s first service pack way ahead of schedule – a startling fact given that the OS has yet to be publicly released. APC quotes the software giant as putting out a call from “customers and partners (to) actively test and provide feedback on Windows Vista SP1 to help us prepare for its release in the second half of CY07 (calendar year 2007)."

Little is known about what the contents of SP1 – or ‘Fiji’ as it has been dubbed – will contain, but basic common sense suggests a mass of security fixes as well as the restoration of feature initially cut to get the OS out the door ‘on time’. Of these, WinFS seems the number one contender.

I’ll be bringing you coverage of Vista’s public unveiling next week (and Willy G will be in attendance) but, after that, promise me one thing… can we then start talking about Vienna instead…?
