We first got whiff of Norton 360, the company’s answer to Microsoft OneCare, back in June and rumours of such a redesign have been surfacing since last year. Well, finally here’s the chance for a fondle.

A public beta of the Norton 360 has been made immediately available and it merges the existing antivirus/antispyware capabilities of previous editions with new automated backup and online transaction security capabilities. Internet threats, online scams and identity thefts are the targets of 360 though it also claims to cast a watchful eye over important documents, photos and music.

“Today’s consumers want to be able to work and play in the connected world with confidence that their information and activities are secure,” twittered Enrique Salem, group president of the Consumer Business Unit of Symantec. “Norton 360 was created to provide computer users and their families a full range of protection that is automatic, powerful, and easy to understand and use. We’re eager to receive customer feedback on the beta, as we make final adjustments for the formal launch of the product.”

I’d also suggest – given the company’s repeated reference to 360 being an ‘all-in-one’ solution in its press release – that Norton 360 was also created because of a sense of nausea created by Windows OneCare. If it wasn’t then I suggest Symantec go talk to WinZip, RealPlayer or Corel to speed up that queasy sensation.

Grab the 360 beta here and pray, for the benefit which competition brings, that it gives Microsoft’s offering a steel toe-capped kick to the delicates.
