Back in September Microsoft announced Vista will be available in no less than seven different versions. Incredibly more have been revealed since and as the OS itself becomes ever more bloated two questions were asked: how will it be shipped and which one should I buy?

Both issues were addressed by Microsoft late last week when it confirmed that not only will Vista somehow squeeeeeze itself onto a standard DVD but that users will have the opportunity to upgrade to different versions from inside the platform.

‘Windows Anytime Upgrade’ (logo above) is the clever tool which enables this and it allows upgrades to packages such as Professional, Small Business, Enterprise and Ultimate for those who find the standard edition (Home Basic) isn’t quite up to scratch. Naturally, being Microsoft, we are also only talking about ‘upgrades’ here and more expenditure, not downgrades and refunds. A full FAQ of Windows Anytime Upgrade can be found here.

As for the news Vista will come on just one DVD, this should help speed production and reduce costs though the company naturally made no reference to this area.

So with the shipping and edition queries seemingly answered just one more remains: how long before someone hacks WAU and gives everyone free Ultimate editions…?
