Away from all things PC, Acer has also been quietly making a name for itself in the GPS sector. I unearthed three new models which should enhance that further.

Identical twins the P610 (above) and P630 drew most attention because of their striking widescreen displays. At four inches and with a native 480 x 272 resolutions they are a cut above the competition and run on a Windows CE 5.0 OS powered by a zippy 400MHz Samsung processor.

There is 64MB of ROM and 64MB RAM on each, an SD card slot and MP3 playback with the differentiator between the two being the complete European maps supplied with the P630 and Bluetooth. The P610 debuts next month for around 299 euros but we don’t yet have the skinny on the P630.

Two portable PDA GPS enabled devices also caught the eye: the C510 (above) and C511. Again identical they nevertheless have impressive specs running Windows Mobile 5.0 on a 300MHz Samsung processor backed up by 64MB RAM and 64MB ROM (128MB ROM on the C511). A 2.8in QVGA display, SD slot and the tried and trusted SiRF Star III navigation technology round things off nicely.

Lastly there was a (literally) sizeable surprise in store in the shape of Acer’s first 26in LCD monitor. It remained a dark horse throughout the event since it was never switched on and a spec sheet was nowhere to be found but we do know it will be called the ‘AL2623W’ and stylistically it is a sight to behold.

Given that Acer’s 24 incher, the AL2423W, is already on the market and has a 1920 x 1200 native res, impressive 1000:1 contrast ratio and 500 cd/m2 brightness we can expect the AL2623W to at least match that but quite when or where it will appear is a mystery. One thing is for sure however and that is, being Acer, it will definitely come with a price to shake up the market.

As for the venue: stunning, but not for the envious!
