Office 2007 Delayed, No One Surprised

In what is fast becoming a none too funny Vista-like path Office 2007 is facing yet another delay.

The software – which was released in a ‘test drive’ online format last week – was first due in Q3 (like Vista), it then jumped to Q4 (like Vista) before swapping from December to January (like Vista/like Vista). Now the productivity suite has shown it is no longer prepared to sit in Vista’s slow track delay ridden schedule and has blasted out on its own to bypass the next gen OS’s January 2007 timeframe to one Microsoft now describes as simply ‘early 2007’.

Microsoft gave no specific reason for the latest slip but simply stated that it was based on both internal testing and beta feedback, which – in laymen’s terms – basically translates as ‘it’s still a bit crap.’ To be fair at this stage the primary reason for the further hold up is likely to be stability since 99.9 per cent of the framework is set in stone (the 0.1 per cent being this). The most sarcastic out there (of whom I couldn’t possibly be a member) may be surprised to learn that Microsoft actually carries out any stability checks on its products prior to the first official Service Pack…

In sum, it looks like we’ll now have Vista before Office 2007 which is a rather scary thought and me the two lines are fast become a circus that is quickly losing its appeal. Speaking of which the freeware OpenOffice.org 2.0.3 was released on Friday and you can get it here.
