It must feel a little like being the overly protective mother of a socially inadequate red headed step child on his first day of ‘big’ school, but Bill Gates knew he’d have to let the public play with Vista sooner rather than later.

That day has now come with Willy G deciding to open up Microsoft’s Beta 2 edition of the next generation OS to the public. Sure it may get shoved around, have its lunch money stolen and not be allowed to sit with the cool kids but these things are all character building. Besides, it could be the smartest move the company has made in a long time.

Two editions of the free download have been made available: a 32bit version that weighs in at 3.5GB and a 64 bitter that is even more at 4.4GB (both available here). All users who register for the test version will also get a free copy of ‘Release Candidate 1’ a more advanced version of the OS though no date has been puts on its arrival other than “later in the year”.

Having a flick around several popular message boards it seems like the haters are already out in full force with accusations ranging from it incorrectly diagnoses system specifications to it ruined my life, burnt down my house and slept with my wife. Which is at least a substantial step up the pecking order from having its legs slapped and hair pulled.

Ah bless, its learning already…
