Tiger Gets 6th Major Update

Since launch Mac OS X ‘Tiger’ 10.4 has more than lived up to its codename and Apple will imminently provide the software with its six major update.

Bringing the operating system to version 10.4.6, the heavyweight patch snuffs out several recently discovered security flaws in OpenGL and has additional fixes relating to AFP Server, AppleScript, Help Viewer, ImageIO, QuartzCore and Webkit plugins.

In addition several enhancements are included such as the latest version of iSync (2.2), improved Spotlight search capabilities for Microsoft Office and iWork produced documents and boosted Bluetooth functionality. Furthermore Apple is promising better 802.1x login authentication and speedier iDisk and WebDAV performance and automatic proxy configuration files. The full Intel download will weigh in at 166MB with the PowerPC version slightly smaller at 131MB. Both will be available in the next few days.

Interestingly, while many column inches are being written about whether Apple will ultimately concede to a Windows OS the company appears to have its hand on the pulse more than ever. Version 10.4.5 of Tiger only debuted in February by contrast long suffering Windows users will have to wait until after the arrival of Vista for their next XP Service Pack. Certainly if a Mac OS could muster the software support of Gate’s rickety platform I know which one I would choose…
