IE For Macs Culled

Such has been the popularity of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer port for Macs that when I referenced it to an Apple aficionado friend of mine he said, “Huh?” Consequently, Big Willy’s company has finally done the decent thing and dropped it.

The announcement comes as no surprise since MS said back in June 2003 that IE would ‘undergo no further development and support would cease in 2005’, but we thought you’d like to know we watch our clocks. With the year fast running out (my hasn’t it flown?), 31 December has been given as the official end for security and performance updates (if you can call a 2003 version of IE5 a secure or performance piece of software?!).

Additionally, from 31 January all IE for Mac download links will be removed, which gives users just one month to grab this antiquated and abandoned browser (get it here quick, quick!) Further rubbing salt in the wounds, Microsoft concludes ‘that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari.’ Naturally, it forgot to mention Firefox or Opera but that had to hurt enough already.

A sad little message on the site still exists saying ‘Find out how Internet Explorer 5 for Mac can show you the Internet in new, exciting ways.’ Which is a little like coming across the pre-bout press conference notes of a Frank Bruno title fight… Kno’ wha a mean, Gatesy?
