It may be about as exciting as buying milk but, like that fine bovine lactation, antivirus software is essential on a day-to-day basis. Bring on Norton’s newbies in all their rich goodness.

2006 editions of Antivirus, Internet Security and Personal Firewall are now available for pre-order on the company’s site with delivery expected in the next two weeks. The big change is the inclusion of antispyware technology, something mooted since April and anyone who has suffered from phantom toolbars (use Firefox!) or noticed an unusual number of pop-ups trying to sign you up to everything from flowers to pharmaceuticals, knows how annoying this can be.

Personal Firewall now also inspects your comp for security holes via a single click, while Internet Security – being a bigger package – subsumes both Antivirus and Personal Firewall into a single product.

UK prices have yet to be released, but our Half Democrat/Half Republican mates will be getting Antivirus for $39.99, Personal Firewall for $49.99 and Internet Security for $69.99. Owners of current editions of these products (and, sneakily, rival ones) will be offered discounts of up to 40 per cent to make the latest switch.
