Sony Gives V To Media PC Enthusiasts

Want a media PC? Like Sony? Here’s something for you.

The Sony Vaio V adds a new letter to the company’s famous product line (and a nasty number of configuration variants: VGC-VA200RB, VGC-VA200B, VGC-VA170B, VGC- VGC-VA200DS, VGC-VA170S) and it could set hearts racing. All Vs are built around a tasty 20in screen which displays either WGXA TV or PC environments up to 1366 x 768 resolution. This may seem low (and a slightly strange figure), but it is fine for this a machine of this type.

Being a proper media device, the PC is built into this screen and the specs aren’t shabby with a Pentium 4 630 (3GHz) processor at its core, 1GB RAM, a 256MB ATI Radeon Xpress 700 graphics card, 500GB of hard drive space (courtesy of two 250GB HDDs), a dual layer DVD writer and Digital Motion Reality TV Tuner.

Everything looks to be finished off with the usual Sony panache, though I’m not really a fan of screens with such large bezels. The RRP is set to be around the 3,000 euro mark (euro mark, geddit?) which is not on the cheap side, but nobody buys Sony equipment if they are looking to save a few quid.

So far, the Elonex Lumina – with its monstrous 40in screen – remains the best media PC we have seen in the labs to date. Given the whopping price (£3,695) however, the V could provide a smaller and more budget friendly alternative.

…and of course, we promise to test it very very thoroughly if we get our hands on it. Scouts’ Honour ;)
