Intel has spent the last year or so evangelising the digital home concept and today the company took a major step towards this vision. Don MacDonald – Vice President & General Manager, Digital Home Group – took to the stage to deliver a keynote speech that conveyed Intel’s commitment to the digital home.

This commitment was epitomised by the launch of a new platform – Viiv. Viiv is the Intel brand for digital home based PCs. Devices that are designed to blend seamlessly with your consumer electronic equipment. But before I delve too deeply into what makes Viiv tick, let’s cover some of what MacDonald had to say.

Much like myself, Don believes that digital content is the key to a revolution in entertainment distribution. I’ve long believed that as broadband performance reaches greater and greater heights, broadcast will no longer be the default entertainment distribution method.

Intel believes that this transition is already happening, with more digital media devices hitting the street every day and more users viewing, listening to and purchasing digital content over the Internet. Digital media is the future and Intel knows that it needs to be driving this revolution rather than watching it.
