It’s that time FPS obsessives (that’s Frames Per Second AND First Person Shooter!) have been waiting for: a new Dell XPS system.

Christened the XPS 600, the sixth generation of the series is a no nonsense, rock em sock em desktop. It cuts right to the chase with an SLI arrangement of nVidia GeForce 7800GTX 256MB graphics cards and – for the first time – it veers away from everything Intel in adopting an nForce4 SLI mobo (basically because it had no other choice).

Other than that bombshell, it is back to the “Inside” branding monster for the processors (available in both single core or dual core variants) and an almost endless array of customisable options including RAM, optical drives, speakers, OS, software and so on and so forth.

To give you an idea of price, I specced up a 3.2GHz P4 640 based system with a gig of RAM, 250GB 7,200rpm HDD, 16x DVD rewriter with dual layer capability, dual 7800GTX cards, no speakers and the standard Dell keyboard and mouse along with Works 7.0 for £1,932 including VAT and shipping.

Naturally, you can go nuts and push the system in the three grand bracket if you want to spaz out on RAID arrangements, widescreen TFTs, Extreme Edition processors and such but that’s the beauty of Dell: it’s completely up to you. (Remember you can call up Dell and negotiate the price and take out basics like peripherals. Something it hates - and few people try - but it works!)

The XPS 600, in all its forms, is available now. So if you want to make all your friends jealous, you know what to do…
