Cue endless jokes about being “on the horizon” because Microsoft has just announced Longhorn (its next generation operating system) will be officially called Windows Vista.

The ceremony, which took place across the pond today led to much whooping and clapping and general Yank carry on that we mild mannered, reserved Brits could never condone (though we did pause for a moment in mid sip of our tea, tilts our heads and go “Hmmn”).

Of far more real world importance, however, is the subsequent news that Evil Lord Redmond will be shipping its latest spawn in “Beta 1” form to developers on 3 August. Expect it to be available on bittorent within minutes of this…

Naturally, there now follows a long period of testing, fine tuning, security patching, more security patching and yet more security patching before the OS officially ships around the middle of next year. Expect security fixes to be released on launch day, or Hacker’s Christmas as I like to call it.

For a closer look at the official ceremony follow this link, or you might just want to giggle at the hysterics. Either choice is equally valid.
