Apple iMproves iMacs

Following last week’s G5 upgrades, Apple’s “I’ve started so I’ll finish” attitude has seen it tart up its iMac too.

The highlights of the revisions are faster PowerPC G5 processors (up to 2GHz), built in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a boost to 512MB RAM, while all machines now ship with ATI Radeon 9600 128MB graphics cards. Needless to say, a copy of Tiger comes as standard.

Given the customisable nature of the iMacs, Apple has outlined three main guide specifications.

For £899 including VAT, an entry level iMac G5 will have a 17in widescreen LCD (1440x900 res), 1.8GHz 64bit PowerPC G5 processor, 512MB DDR400 RAM, DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, 128MB Radeon 9600 graphics cards, AirPort Extreme wireless networking, Bluetooth 2.0, Ethernet and modem connectivity, 160GB 7,200rpm SATA HDD, 2x FireWire, 3x USB2.0 and 2x USB1.1 (why?) ports and built in stereo speakers with mic.

A mid range iMac (£999 including VAT) is laid out as having the same display, memory, graphics card and connectivity options, but an improved 2GHz processor and dual layer DVD rewriter.

Shell out £1,199 (incl. VAT) and a 20incher with 1680x1050 max res is yours, along with a capacious 250GB 7,200rpm SATA HDD. Other than this is it identical to the mid-range iMac.

As always, Apple is offering some crazy built-to-order options with such goodies as 2GB RAM and a 400GB hard drive, but prices for this kind of thing only come on application.

It’s all go at Apple right now. New OS, new G5s, new iMacs, now we just want to see that 5th Gen iPod…

In separate news, Apple has just released its latest patch for Panther (OS X 10.3). It fixes 19 (yes: One. Nine.) flaws from how the OS handles tiff image files to Bluetooth security issues.
