X2 Unveils Media PC

New company X2, a joint venture with Taiwanese motherboard manufacturer MSI, has unveiled a new Media Center PC called the MEGA 865. This will be featured at the upcoming Computer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The new X2 line will sport a "Powered By MSI" label as part of the 50/50 venture.

Tthe MEGA 865 shares more than a passing resemblacne to the Systemax Encore 3107. Like that PC, the MEGA 865 doesn’t run Windows Media Center but is actually based on standard Windows XP. Nevertheless, X2 claims that it is superior to most media PC, as it was designed from the ground up to be a “true” media PC. It highlights the advanced front colour control panel, which displays info such as current mode, CD and/or DVD playback status (chapter/time/track info), audio and video info/settings and volume plus PC environment data such as internal PC temperature and HD status. The included remote controller is designed to work seamlessly with all of the MEGA 865’s various functions without the need for a keyboard. The MEGA 865 also features X2’s Instant Play technology that allows the MEGA 865 to turn on almost instantly, like more traditional electronics components, to play movies, videos and music or view photos without the need to boot up to Windows, saving power and boot-up time.

The specs are unsurprisingly far more up to date than the Systemax Encore 3107, featuring an Intel Pentium 4, 3.0GHz Hyper-threading processor, 2GB of DDR400 memory and up to a 400GB hard drive. The MEGA 865 also has a built-in 802.11b+g Wi-Fi Wireless LAN and 10/100 fast Ethernet LAN networking. The MEGA 865 also includes a 6-in-1 Media Card Reader (SD, MMC, Compact Flash, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro) and 5.1 channel surround sound. Graphics are AGP powered and there’s a standard 32-bit PCI slot for extra expansion.

Prices are expected to start at $999 through $1,999 depending upon configuration. The design can also be modified and configured to order based on the customer’s preference. UK availability was not clear at the time or writing.
