But for me, the most interesting announcement was HP’s new LightScribe Direct Disc Labelling technology. With everyone burning optical discs now, there’s a need for a simple and attractive labelling method. Writing on a disc looks messy, and stickers have a habit of getting chewed up inside your drive, causing all sorts of problems.
LightScribe is a new technology that allows a label to be burned onto the disk using the laser inside the optical drive. Unlike similar technologies, LightScribe burns the label on the top of the disc, rather than the writable side.

So, when you’ve finished writing your data to a disc, you simply eject it, flip it over and put it back in the drive. You can then use LightScribe to etch a label onto the top surface.
Unfortunately, LightScribe enabled optical drives will not be available until January 2005, but you can be sure that TrustedReviews will have one to test as soon as they appear.
