Dell Announces 64-bit Pentium 4 Workstation

Dell announced last week that it has released a new workstation machine. The Dell Precision 370 fits into its line up as its most advanced workstation based on a standard Pentium 4 CPU rather than a Xeon, making it a more affordable option.

Workstations differ from standard PCs in that the components have been thoroughly tested and certified for use with key software applications, such as high-end Computer Aided Design (CAD), video editing, or web design applications.

The Precision 370 is based on new core technology from Intel, Dell is offering the 370 with Pentium 4 processors up to 3.6GHz featuring Hyper-Threading technology. The 3.2, 3.4 and 3.6GHz variants feature Intel's EM64T 64-bit extensions. This enables application vendors to move over the 4GB memory limit, which is very helpful for dealing with large datasets using in rendering or data analysis. Also of help here is the faster I/O offered by new technologies such as PCI Express and DDR2.

The 370 can be configured with up to three hard disks using either SATA or SCSI or in two-disk configurations that can use of RAID 0 or 1. The graphics card options include PCI Express cards from either ATI’s FireGL or nVidia’s Quadro range.

The Precision 370 is available here in either desktop or mini-tower configurations for £1150 including VAT.
