Dell Expands Server Line-Up and Beefs up Support

Earlier this week Dell announced its new line of PowerEdge servers offering support for the new Intel Xeon processors with 64-bit EM64T technology.

The new servers are based on Intel’s new 7520 chipset, featuring an 800MHz FSB, and DDR-2. Up to 8GB of ECC RAM can be fitted, and double that possible once larger memory modules appear. Dell servers use OpenManage 4, for advanced remote management features and diagnostic tools. OpenManage 4 now uses industry-standard Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) controllers. This means that the Dell servers can be even be managed in an mixed brand server environment.

The servers will be available with Windows Server 2003 (32-bit edition) or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit processors.

Dells’s PowerEdge 1850 and 2850 servers are rack-mounted devices for corporations who wish to maximise their use of space. These updated servers are available now and prices start of £1,099 and £1,399 ex VAT respectively.

The entry-level 1800 will be available from 19 August and will cost £599 ex VAT.

At the same time Dell is increasing the level of support it offers to customers with Platinum Enterprise Services. This means that when customres take out this new level of support on new systems, all the Dell hardware they already own will be brought up to the Platinum level of service. Platinum level customers will receive support directly from a Technical Account Manager and have access to expert advice from Dell’s most senior engineers.
