Most location aware apps specialise in one thing – finding restaurants, cinemas or cash machines nearby, but AroundMe attempts to be a jack-of-all-trades by covering a whole load of different services and largely manages to make a good fist of it. Load it up and it’ll detect your location and then show you a list of different categories of services that you can choose from including supermarkets, pubs, restaurants, taxi ranks and petrol stations.

Then when you tap on one of these, it displays a list of relevant places sorted by their proximity to your current location. If you choose an item on the list, it plots its location using Google Maps, complete with information such as the full address and telephone number. The app is free but it is ad-supported, although the ads appear in a small windows at the top of the screen so they’re not that intrusive. What it lacks is the critic and user reviews that you get on more specialised apps.

Verdict

AroundMe provides a quick way to find a whole range of useful services nearby.
