If you’re a regular reader of TrustedReviews you will have noticed that things haven’t been as swift as we might have liked. The main reason for this is the phenomenal response from you, the readers. The amount of users around the world fighting to read the many pages of TrustedReviews meant that the site was beginning to buckle under the strain.
Of course we were aware of the limitations of the original TrustedReviews site and had been working on a completely new version in the background. In fact, back in June 2005 when TrustedReviews allied itself with Bit-Tech.net, we commissioned Rich from Bit-Tech to completely rewrite TrustedReviews from the ground up.
The original TrustedReviews site was coded using Microsoft .net and SQL Server, but Rich has coded the new version using Linux, PHP and MySQL. The upshot being that we can now expand the hardware complement whenever necessary without the need to buy expensive licenses. What does that mean to you? Well, it means that TrustedReviews should never be anything less than lightning fast from now on.
As well as the complete recode, we’ve also thrown a couple of new dual Xeon servers at the beast, so not only have we got a new site running far more efficiently than ever, it’s also got some serious new hardware to run on.
Along with the new site, we have also thrown in a completely new Forum. We’ve moved away from phpBB in favour of vBulletin. All user accounts have been transferred intact, so the change shouldn’t affect the way you use the Forum. If you’re a bit concerned by the truly radioactive orange colour scheme of the new Forum, don’t despair. Rich will be toning down the slightly garish look as soon as we’ve ironed out any little niggles that appear in the main site.
Despite the fact that Rich has built this new site from the ground up, you’ve probably noticed that it doesn’t look too different from the previous version. The reason for this is that we wanted to get a fast and stable website off the ground before we started worrying about design. However, next on the list is a serious overhaul to the design and layout of TrustedReviews, so expect to see a bit of a facelift in the coming months.
Obviously we did as much testing as humanly possible before switching the new site on, but as with any major update, we probably haven’t caught all the little bugs lurking in the system. So, if you do spot anything that doesn’t look quite right, please let us know by posting in the Feedback section of the Forum. Even if you don’t spot a problem and just want to give us some feedback on the new site please feel free to let us know.
With the hard work of getting a new website off the ground out of the way, we can go back to concentrating on producing high-quality reviews, and driving TrustedReviews forward. We’ve got a lot of things planned for the future to improve and enhance TrustedReviews, but ultimately we want to continue bringing you the most comprehensive technology reviews around.
So, let me say it again, thanks for waiting. We know that there are a lot of loyal TrustedReviews readers out there who have not had the easiest time of late. To put it bluntly TrustedReviews became a victim of its own success – with the number of readers constantly climbing and the number of page views reaching dizzying heights, we knew that drastic action had to be taken. It may have taken a while to get a completely new website developed, but we hope you’ll agree that it was worth the wait.
If you’ve been frustrated by slow page loads on TrustedReviews, rest assured that those days are gone. Now flicking between the pages of TrustedReviews is as fast as flicking through a magazine and we fully intend to keep it that way.
