PS4 comes out top in the battle of the E3 console conferences

There was smoke, fireworks (well in-game fireworks at least), exciting games you can only play on a PS4 and some impressive hardware announcements. Sony did E3 2014 right.

When I wrote my piece about the Xbox One lacking identity in its own E3 conference, I wondered if I had jumped the gun. Would Sony do any better or would it be more of the same? Could Nintendo really have the press conference to beat?

From the digital event, it was evident that Nintendo is a brand that has no problem with identity. In fact, its main problem is that its identity is too rigid, too formed and too restrictive.

Once again we saw a conference that will delight hardcore Nintendophiles, but leave the majority of gamers vaguely bemused as to why everything looks so cartoonish and last-gen. At least it offered something else though. The Wii U could easily sit next to an Xbox One or PS4 in the same household, its unique IPs and GamePad controller providing a different gaming experience to the other two and appealing to a slightly different audience.

However, in this three horse console race there is no denying Sony won the battle of the press conferences. The Japanese gaming giant blended potentially impressive original IP with a strong focus on indie gaming. Almost half an hour was dedicated to bringing indie devs to the fore, showing off their labours of love.

We got entranced by Entwined, a game that uses the dual sticks in an innovative way, while the makers of Journey brought us Abzu, another visual feast in the making. Then there was No Man’s Sky, a hugely ambitious space exploration game. All these, and more, were given their own stage time during the event.

This was a far cry from the short video of indie games that Microsoft played in its E3 2014 conference.

The additional content and options on third party games for PS4 also seemed to trump the “we’ll get DLC first on some games” that Microsoft's Xbox One was armed with. Far Cry 4 on the PS4 and PS3 will let players who do not own the game play cooperatively with a friend that does. For free. That’s very good news and exclusive to PlayStation consoles.

Destiny

Destiny will feature exclusive PS4 content

The freebies and added content were not isolated to Far Cry 4 either. Destiny will feature "exclusive, playable content just for the PlayStation community." That’s not content that will appear first on the PS4 and then on other platforms, this is content that will only appear on the Sony console.

The PS4 will also bring more than 25 new free-to-play games to the platform over the next year. These include big titles such as Planetside 2 and Kingdom Under Fire 2 as well as cutesier titles like Fat Princess: Piece of Cake, My Singing Monsters and Reaper.

Kingdom Under Fire 2

Kingdom Under Fire 2 will be free on the PS4

It could have been a mess. There was so much to say that without meticulous planning and good story-telling Sony’s conference would have been confusing. What’s the focus? Is it AAA titles or is it about indie games and free to play? Does the newly announced PS TV hardware and Project Morpheus cloud things further? Surely going on about exclusive Sony TV shows was a step too far?

But it didn’t feel a mess. Everything flowed seamlessly and at no point during the conference did it feel like Sony was losing its way. It continuously reiterated the point it was trying to make the PS4 the best place for gamers and therefore the conference was about appealing to gamers in more ways than just games.

Free content, check. Unique indie games? Absolutely. Exclusive AAA titles? Three of them in fact. The Order 1886 looked dangerously dark and foreboding, Uncharted 4 sumptuous and Little Big Planet 3 a riot. While we should never judge a game by its trailer, all three look mightily impressive.

It's hard to forget the innovation of PS TV and Morpheus, as well as PlayStation Now coming to Sony TVs, PS4 and PS Vita in the US later this year. Sony's exciting announcements just went on and on.

It might not all come perfectly, but there’s enough there to give even the most hardened gamer pause for thought and optimism for the future.

You with this round Sony.

I have to disagree with this, I thought all of them were a little underwhelming. I think that it is now clear to everyone that these consoles are very underpowered and will offer very little improvements over the previous generations games.

Sony showed 19 games Microsoft 20 so nothing in it really. Morpheus is a joke the Sony PS4 hardware is incapable of running anything except the most basic limited games in VR. Maybe the next gen will fair better but for now that's at least 5 years away.

Furthermore whilst Microsoft focused purely on games Sony went on for far too long about TV, apps etc it was almost as if they had swapped policies.

Nintendo showed what can be achieved with lesser hardware but clever artistic design with Zelda etc.

Agree wholeheartedly as the TV talk from Sony gets praise whilst MS only talking about games is found insufficient now. All the TV features are irrelevant to my region so I think it is a waste.
The media should concentrate on the gaming aspect and leave all the shiny gimmicks to whomever wants to spend money on them.

It does seem to be fashionable in the tech world to declare Sony are omg wtf just amazing at the moment, even when there's absolutely no reason to.

I'm not a console gamer but if anything, Microsoft had the better presentation.. and by a fair distance.

Consoles are about games, and most of Sony's conference wasn't.

To be brutally honest though, this was a mediocre E3 all round. Nintendo were probably the most interesting of the three console makers, and they weren't even there.

Best thing at E3 was Alien Isolation.

On PC.

I agree with the article. You could tell Microsoft reeked of fear and lacked content. Sony's conference WAS about games, but Sony didn't just try to cram a bunch of multiplats and 2016 games together for fear of backlash and call it a day like Microsoft did. Obviously an Xbox fan boy would over look the fact that Microsoft crammed in mostly 3rd party games and games we allready knew about. For example, Project Spark was out months ago and is on PC. Forza Horizon 2 was announced weeks ago and looks like a milked Forza 5. Sunset Overdrive was old news that they allready showed. The "new" hitters for Microsoft were CGI's of, Phantum Dust, Crackdown and Scalebound and a few good indies but no release windows. It looked like Microsoft was scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

Sony focused on games but they also made announcements for the future of PlayStation technology. Sony could've easily brought in Driveclub, Deep Down, bunch more multiplats if Microsoft didn't allready reveal them all, gameplay of H1Z1, Kingdom Under Fire 2, Everquest Next, and more. Sony focused on exclusive things that we really hadn't seen too much of yet. Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, Little Big Planet 3, The Last of Us Remastered release date, Let it Die, The Order 1886 amazing footage, as well as announcements for their PlayStation Now open beta. Most of Sony's announcements were for this year or 2015, not mystery dates like Microsoft. Sony revealled alot but Sony didn't reveal all their cards either. The Last Guardian wasn't even revealled which is dissapointing.

We're really not and I'm no PS4 fanboy. Having sat through all three conferences I simply found Sony's to be far more compelling. That's not to say that the Xbox hasn't got some great exclusive titles and isn't a great system. I just don't think it offers as many fringe benefits as the PS4.

I'm not the fanboy here, old chap.

I don't have a console or much interest in getting one (except I do want to play Mario Kart) so am completely agnostic. I can judge everything dispassionately, and dispassionately both Sony and Microsofts presentations were mediocre, with Sony's being worse.

Nintendo had the most interesting looking console title of E3 in Zelda and are still riding the Mario Kart wave so come out ahead of the other two, despite not bothering to show up.

Sony's conference was dull for everyone except Sony devotees. Sorry, but it was.

Microsoft didn't show much more, but at least they didn't try to do anything except show us games.

Sony didn't have their best show and MSoft was even worse is what eveyone is trying to say. Msoft was afraid to mention Kinect and now that I think about it did not mention any hardware just all games (we're all about the gamers sound familiar anyone). Sony went with games and hardware. We knew Sony was going to come out with something to rival the all in one entertainment center that MSoft went for in one machine. The SonyTV I think is brilliant and will be a success. Destiny being adverstised a PS4 product will help Sony's sales a lot. I think that was brilliant marketing by them again. Playstation Now is without a doubt going to continue the win streak. Nobobdy crushed the either by any means but Sony didn't get hurt either.

Don't think so; while I do prefer Sony and what the PS4 has to offer, I was not that impressed overall with the conferences. It was just boring, seeing stuff we've already seen before, like more FPSs, more sports from EA (though they did impress with Mirror's Edge 2) and more Assassin's Creed again from Ubisoft when we only just got a AC game a few months ago. Square Enix showing little to nothing was disappointing and inexcusable; they've been working on Versus XIII (now XV) for years so there's no excuse for not showing anything about it.

Nintendo was the most impressive of the lot; some interesting stuff like Splatoon, the new Zelda game, and Bayonetta 1+2 bundle, as well as the sneak tease of the long neglected Starfox. It's a nice start and a good preview of what's to come, but I just hope Nintendo don't over rely and over saturate their games library with more Mario and Zelda and neglect their other franchises like F-Zero, Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus, as well as Starfox I just mentioned. They need to put more work into those, especially with Starfox and F-Zero as they've been gone for far too long at a decade or even longer than that.

I've seen this in a couple of places now but I really don't agree. Sony's slate frankly looks a little light to me with very few big exclusives coming this year. Sure they had a lot of stuff for 2015 and beyond but so does Microsoft and they chose not to show it in order to highlight games coming this year.

For me it's summed up by this: "Exclusive AAA titles? Three of them in fact." Three? That's not good (albeit there were more than that of course)! Look at Microsoft's offerings and before 2014 is over we've got Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2 and of course the Halo Master Chief collection which will surely shift a fair few consoles. There's a bunch more scheduled for 2015 too and some of them look really interesting. Neither company have any exclusive content really worth bothering about although, again, Microsoft have the biggest franchise tied up with Call of Duty. Love it or loathe it there's no arguing that's another big system seller for Microsoft at this point.

I dunno, maybe the point it all came together for me was when Sony rolled out GTA V on PS4. Look at the stories that were published during the keynote and almost all said it was exclusive to PS4, only afterwards did the full story come out via Rockstar. That sort of slight of hand isn't something a company with a strong slate of exclusives would need to resort to.

All that being said the bulk of the titles this year and next will, of course, be third party and available across both consoles and the PC. So, really, all of this 'who won' stuff is pointless so long as the console ecosystem is strong and all signs point to that being the case as E3 2014 draws to a close.

The website is biased towards Sony but I agreed with most of what they said. The only highlights on the MS side are Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon 2. Fable Legends initially impressed me but I was then put off by the jester humour. That sort of thing worked in Sunset Overdrive but looked juvenile and silly in Fable. The humour and characters were indicative of the type of audience MS are targeting. "Hey that's me" syndrome for youths. Infamous Second Son was the same on PS4.

The rest of the games are either on PS4 as well and run better, or just didn't impress me. If you're going to insist Sony only had 3 exclusives then quote the Halo collection on XB1, then you have to include The Last Of Us remaster on PS4 which blows away everything shown on the MS side.

Sony obviously paid Rockstar for the right to announce first. There is nothing sinister in that. It's not like they offered a corrupt bribe to deny the game on the other platform like MS do. Sunset Overdrive is a good example. MS do not own that studio or pay the wages. MS pay to deny, Sony pay to create. That dev is blacklisted now for taking the MS bribe like the Titanfall dev.

The Call Of Duty game will look and play much better on PS4. Any fans should jump ship. The same applies to Halo. The genius talent that created it are doing Destiny now, so the new MS studio taking it over will just copy what they did and offer no creative innovation. Any Halo fans should jump ship to play Destiny on the more powerful PS4.

Let's face it, the three best games shown at E3 are The Last Of Us remaster, GTAV remaster and Far Cry 4. One is exclusive to PS4 and the other two will run much better on PS4. That is the Sony win for me.

1) How do you know GTA will run better on PS4? Have you been to the future or something?
2) Halo: MCC > TLOU: Remastered. The Last Of Us is just one game that only came out last year + 2 dlc's. The Halo Collection is 4 of the best FPS ever made (as far as consoles are concerned) all upgraded to 1080p 60fps with halo 2 being given full remastering into a game that will look almost like Halo 5.
3) MS didn't bribe Insomniac to make Sunset Overdrive exclusive. Insomniac went to Sony 1st but Sony would not publish the game unless it could have complete control over the IP, MS allowed Insomniac to own the IP and therefore give them full creative control over the game. Therefore Sony tried to pay to control, and Microsoft played to create.
Finally, the CoD: Advanced warfare devs are targeting 1080p/60fps on both consoles, and any major fan will care more about first access to DLC and a more lively and less laggy online service. Compared to XBL on One and 360, PSN is a silent wasteland at least from my experience on PS3 and I've been told similar things about PS4.

June 12, 2014, 9:10 am

Like remakes, TV, an old game streaming system that costs a the price of a "PlayStation TV" box and $99.99, 3 exclusive games all coming out in 2015 and literally one neat feature on FarCry 4.
The fact that Destiny gets exclusive content is also mentioned ignoring the fact that many other 3rd party games are getting all DLC first or exclusive content on Xbox One. You sir, are biased. Hell, I bet last year you criticised Microsoft's conference for being without focus and about TV. Something Sony copied word for word this year.

Completely disagree...its actually comical to see this kind of article. If you are looking for great games to play on your console, E3 clearly showed xbox one is the one to have. PS4 has 0 ... That is zero exclusives releasing in 2014....and xbox one - Forza Horizon 2 leads the way on september 30 which is a gorgeous open world racing game in stunning 1080p. There arent many open world games in 1080p...so very impressive. Then followed by beautiful sunset overdrive in October and then Halo master chief collection which has over 100 multiplayer maps plus all the campaigns in 1080p at 60 fps. So ummm...your article is wrong...xbox one and xbox one only has quite a few great games coming in 2014. In 2015 the gap increases with xbox one providing a massive list of fantastic exclusives and releasing its direct x 12 which will really unleash the piwer of the xbox one. Completely rediculous article...absolutely the opposite of reality....i am starting to think soby is paying these sites to help the stay out of bankruptcy.

Hi

As I see that many people have misconstrued this article even though the titles is quite clear.

This wasn't an article about the PS4 being better than the Xbox One or even that it has better exclusives.

It is that Sony had a much more engaging and interesting conference than Microsoft and gave themselves more of an identity.

Apparently PS4's stronger hardware, ~3.5 million sales lead, large number of 1st party developers, more games, and more developer support have microsoft fanboys extremely upset, causing them to spread lies and hatred. Thankfully everyone is ignoring these children and buying PS4s like hotcakes anyway.

8+ million PS4s and counting. Nothing you say will stop it, you are helpless. Keep lying and hating while everyone else ignores you.

It's good to know you're completely wrong and raging against facts and reality, and nothing you say will happen. You are clearly ill hating a corporation and pieces of plastic.

PS4 will have the graphics advantage the entire gen. PS4 hardware and software will outsell Xbox globally the entire gen. PS4 will have more dev support and more 1st party games the entire gen. Sony still has a large number of 1st party studios and they're all working on PS4 games. PS4 will make a net profit, Sony won't go bankrupt.

You are clearly malicious and here to spread your hatred of PS4/Sony and spread lies. You have a negative value whereever you post. Nothing you say is remotely constructive or factual.

PS4 games not on Xbox One revealed at E3 2014: LittleBigPlanet 3, Entwined, Bloodborne, The Talos Principle, Let It Die, Rachet & Clank, Infamous First Light, Kingdom Under Fire 2 and tons of indie games. No Man's Land, Grim Fandango, and ABZU timed exclusive.

8 minutes of it was tv/movie/app talk, the rest was actually games related (PS Now, small sized Vita, Morpheus, and Free to Play). The rest of the show was wall to wall games trailers and reveals, 110-120 minutes total. You are clearly exaggerating and distorting the conference.

I don't think people have misunderstood you, I think they just flat out disagree with your assertion. I certainly did.

Hopefully from the responses here you'll have noted that the slightly strange rose-tinted view that tech journos seem to have of Sony at the moment isn't shared particularly widely among the general public.
