Toshiba has announced a new Windows 10 2-in-1, the DynaPad, to compete against the Microsoft Surface range.
The new DynaPad emerges into an increasingly crowded 2-in-1 market, but Toshiba has a couple of distinguishing features up its sleeve.
The Toshiba DynaPad has a 12-inch 1920 x 1280 IPS display, a 1.44 GHz Atom processor, and 4GB of RAM. Those aren’t specs to frighten the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (or even the Surface Pro 3), but such modest specs have their advantages.
For one thing, the DynaPad is going to be significantly more portable than Microsoft’s hybrid heavyweight. It weighs just 569 grams without its keyboard add-on, and is just 6.6mm thin.
Even with that aforementioned solid keyboard attached, the DynaPad remains the right side of a kilogram (996g).
Perhaps the biggest distinguishing feature of the DynaPad, however, is its advanced stylus. It’s a Wacom Active Electrostatics TruPen that combines with metal mesh sensor technology to detect 2,048 levels of pressure – double that of the Surface Pro 4 and its latest Surface Pen.

Toshiba says that this technology makes writing on the DynaPad feel like writing on a piece of paper. For artists and designers on the move, then, the Toshiba DynaPad could be a compelling alternative to the all-conquering Surface Pro range.
This isn’t the first DynaPad tablet release by Toshiba. In fact, the first DynaPad was released way back in 1993, years before the recent tablet revolution kicked off.
Toshiba’s dynaPad will be available in the US and Europe in the first quarter of 2016, and it’s available to pre-order now in its native Japan.
