Sony offers early Android Marshmallow update to just 10,000 Xperia users

Sony is notorious for its lethargic software update cycle, but a new early-bird rollout scheme will give select users the new Marshmallow upgrade ahead of time.

The company just unveiled the ‘Sony’s Concept for Android: Marshmallow edition’ scheme which, despite the clunky name, is actually pretty enticing.

The program gives Xperia users the opportunity to play with an early access installation of Google’s latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow mobile operating system.

It’s actually an extension of ‘Sony’s Concept for Android’, a beta initiative launched back in July that lets Xperia users trial concept software builds.

Android 5.0 Lollipop took around six months to make it onto the then-flagship Xperia Z3, so having access to the newly released Marshmallow on Xperia devices will be an exciting prospect.

Anthony Devenish, PR Manager at Sony, explains:

Rather than merely previewing a new software version, this is about a proof-of-concept way of working, whereby we build a new user experience – and more importantly, process – from the ground up, that will also allow us to be more responsive in developing and rolling out the Sony Android upgrades Xperia users want, more quickly.”

Unfortunately, there’s a pretty big catch: only the first 10,000 applicants will be given access to the new concept software.

What’s more, the scheme is only available to Sony Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact users.

As such, owners of the new Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, and Z5 Premium likely won’t have access to Marshmallow for some time.

We should also note that the scheme is only available in the following select countries: Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ireland, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

According to Sony, successful applicants “will be notified over the coming weeks”.
