Vignette is a word with a number of meanings, but in photography it is generally taken to mean an effect where an image becomes less visible towards the edges of the frame, either by blurring or by masking. This effect can be an accidental by-product of poor lens or camera design, or it can be created deliberately as an artistic effect. In this aspect it is sometimes used to give portraits a romantic and nostalgic look, and it is popular with wedding photographers for this reason.
