Image Editing Tutorial - Vignetting

In this image editing tutorial I’m using Corel Paint Shop Pro, but the same technique will work in Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, Ulead PhotoImpact, ArcSoft PhotoStudio, GIMP and many others. There may be slight differences in the appearance of tools and menus, but the process is the same.

Vignette is a word with a number of meanings, but in photography it is generally taken to mean an effect where an image becomes less visible towards the edges of the frame, either by blurring or by masking. This effect can be an accidental by-product of poor lens or camera design, or it can be created deliberately as an artistic effect. In this aspect it is sometimes used to give portraits a romantic and nostalgic look, and it is popular with wedding photographers for this reason.
