Image Editing Tutorial - Selective Colour Replacement

For this tutorial I have used Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, however most of the methods and tools that I have used are common to many other image editing programs, so you should have no problems following this tutorial in recent versions of Adobe Photoshop, Corel Paint Shop Pro, Ulead PhotoImpact or earlier versions of Elements, as well as several others. Where a method is unique to Elements 5 I’ve noted so in the text.

Here’s a picture of my old car. Before I part-exchanged it for a nice black 944S, I was thinking of re-spraying it. The paintwork was looking a bit weather-beaten, and the stone-chips were starting to rust despite the galvanised bodywork. But what colour to paint it? Fortunately using a photo editing program it’s possible to preview the results without the expense of a spray booth.

Hmm, how about bright orange?

Well OK, maybe that only works on the Ford Focus RS, as I’m sure a certain Editor-in-Chief would agree. Still, to find out how it’s done, read on.
