Emphasising Highlights

Emphasising Highlights

To boost the highlights of an image the whole tone curve can be adjusted upward, including moving the lowest point on the curve up the vertical axis, and the highest point leftwards along the top of the horizontal axis. This increases the brightness of the whole image, and will cause the brighter highlights to be burned out, but the result can be quite pleasing for the right kind of image. This technique works especially well on black-and-white images, producing an ethereal high-key image.

Again in Photoshop Elements the degree of control is somewhat limited by the easy-to-use interface, but by clicking on the Increase Midtones pre-set and then moving the sliders for Adjust Highlights, Midtone Brightness and Adjust Shadows all to the right the same effect can be achieved.
