Reversing dark tones
An even more striking effect is produced by reversing the dark tones. By dragging the mid-point on the curve down to the bottom and raising the leftmost point to the the top of the graph producing a “U” shape, all the tones darker than the mid-point are reversed, which in this image means the foreground and the boat itself. Again the overall brightness can be adjusted by changing the height of the mid-point of the curve.
This another effect that cannot be replicated in Photoshop Elements 8, but it is quite easy to do in GIMP 2, Paint Shop Pro X2 and of course the full version of Adobe Photoshop.
