Epson Asia Trip 2008

Next up was the manufacturing line.

What first strikes you about the manufacturing line is how the whole process is very labour intensive. OK, there are no particularly dangerous or precise jobs that need to be done by machine - at this point they're just slotting the components into the chassis and screwing everything shut - but still the fact that no machines at all were used is quite surprising. Even delicate operations like cleaning a filter is done by hand with a cotton swab.

Each line of benches is essentially dedicated to a single model and as each person finishes their allotted task they literally pass it onto the next person in line - there are no conveyor belts here. On average, we were told each projector takes about three hours to go from components to retail packaging, including two hours of testing along the way, so it's a pretty efficient process.
