It wasn’t that long ago that a DVD writer was a luxury item, and even if you could afford the staggeringly high asking price, you would probably find yourself bankrupted with the media cost. But now a DVD writer is a commodity item – in fact you can buy a DVD writer for the price of a couple of DVD movies!

Despite the considerable drop in price, the speed of DVD writers hasn’t stopped moving forward, while the level of compatibility has also increased. Two of the drives on test here will burn DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL, CD-R/RW and DVD-RAM, while one will do all that AND burn LightScribe discs as well!

To get the best out of all these drives we ran our usual gruelling and time consuming suite of tests, using high quality Verbatim branded media. The fastest media available was used for each drive, allowing all the units to perform to the best of their ability.

A highlight in this test is that TrustedReviews has a UK exclusive review of the new NEC ND-4550A drive. Previous NEC units have proved to be great performers, while remaining reasonably priced, so I was keen to see if the latest model lived up to its heritage. Likewise, LG drives have also received accolades in past tests, mainly to do with their full media support.

So, if you’re in the market for a new DVD writer, check out the four contenders in this roundup and see which one fits your criteria.

Many thanks to Verbatim for supplying all the media for this group test. To find out more about Verbatim and its products click here.
