Photo Competition - March Winners

Finally we come to our prize winners for this month. Normally I tell you what a hard job it was picking just three winners from so many excellent entries, but in fact this month the three winners were immediately obvious; it was deciding on the other twelve finalists that was the difficult bit.

Naturally our first winner is a bird photo, but this one stood out from the others like…well, like a pink Flamingo on a calm, still lake. First-time entrant Dimitris Spanos of Thessaloniki, Greece, took this stunning shot on his Fujifilm S6500fd bridge camera, proving that you don't need a DSLR to take great photos. Dimitris wins himself a SanDisk 2GB SD card and 5-in-1 card reader, as well as a bundle pack containing Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 and Premiere Elements 7.

Our second prize winner is another first time entrant, Mark Stokes, who's practically a neighbour from Ermington here in Devon. You can see from his photo why this part of the world is such a popular holiday destination. It a picture of the Longships Lighthouse, near Land's End in Cornwall, shot on a Canon EOS 20D with a Tamron 55-200mm lens. A shutter speed of 1/800th of a second has frozen the pounding waves in motion. Mark wins a SanDisk 2GB CompactFlash card and 5-in-1 reader, as well as the Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 and Premiere Elements 7 software bundle.

Our top prize winner this month is another photo from Cornwall. Ryan Brkovic of Newquay captured this excellent dynamic composition of one of the many surfers who practice daily on Cornwall's Atlantic beaches, using his Canon EOS 350D with and 80mm lens and a shutter speed of 1/1600th of a second to freeze every drop of water. Not only is it a superb photo, it exemplifies the theme of Life on Water, and is a worthy winner of a SanDisk 2GB Extreme III memory card, a 5-in-1 card reader and a copy of Adobe Lightroom 2.

Many thanks to all our entrants, and congratulations to Dimitris , Mark and Ryan. Don't forget that the current round of our photography competition is open, with the theme of "Black and White" and a closing date of April 30th 2009.
