Digital Photography Competition – The Winners

The Winners
There were so many great photos entered that I wish we had more prizes to give away, but in the end there can be only three winners, and here they are.

One of the strangest shots entered, but a favourite among the team was this humorous and imaginative composition from Erik Macisevskij of London, UK. Erik used a Canon EOS 450D with a 23mm focal length and an exposure of 1/60th of a second at f/3.5 to control the depth of field. I love the sad face and broken heart stuck on to the mannequin with blu-tac. Erik wins a SanDisk Extreme III 2GB SD card and a 5-in-1 card reader.

Great photography is as much about spotting a great photo as it is about knowing how to take it, and both skills are demonstrated by this brilliant photo from Abilio “Billy” Ambas of Asturias, Spain. Everyone in the office loved this composition, mostly because it is so strangely disorienting, but also because it cleverly manages to incorporate all three parts of the theme in an unusual and creative way. Billy took the photo using his Panasonic FZ50 at the Mare Nostrum, a commercial centre Barcelona. The building is covered in curved mirrored glass, resulting in these oddly distorted reflections. Billy wins a SanDisk Extreme III 2GB SD card and a 5-in-1 card reader, and the Olympus mju 850 SW waterproof compact camera.

Our first prize this month goes to this simple but beautiful natural light shot by Cameron Crichton of Edinburgh, Scotland. Although it’s not the most technically complex shot submitted, everyone in the office loved it for its simplicity and its air of calm. It is also nicely finished and presented, and shows that despite the lousy weather we’ve had here in Britain, some people can still go out and take a really good photo. Cameron wins himself a SanDisk Extreme III 2GB SD card and a 5-in-1 card reader and a superb Olympus E420 digital SLR camera. I hope he’ll use it to send us more great pictures.

Congratulations to Erik, Abilio and Cameron, and many thanks to everyone else who entered for the uniformly high standard of submissions. We’re already looking forward to seeing what you can all do with our September competition, which has even more great prizes, including a superb Samsung GX-20 digital SLR. Get your entries in now to see your name on this page next month!
