Finally we come to the prize winners, and having seen the runners-up you can appreciate how hard it was to pick the best three. Our first winner is Nazreen Essack of Cape Town, South Africa, with this gorgeous composition shot inside the Taal (Language) Monument in Pearl Valley, Cape Town. As I said earlier, good black and white photography is all about light, shade, texture and composition, and this photo has all four, and well as perfect exposure. It was shot on a Nikon D70s using an 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 lens, at an exposure of 1/15th of a second at f/3.5. Nazreen wins himself a SanDisk 2GB CompactFlash card and 5-in-1 card reader, as well as a bundle pack containing Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 and Premiere Elements 7.
Our next prize winner is this superbly detailed macro shot from Nick Tsiatinis of Barwell, Leicestershire, UK. Nick explains "This photo was taken with my Olympus E420 and new 35mm Macro lens. It was the first full day I had the lens, it had just finished pouring with rain and so I decided to venture out into the garden to see if I could capture anything nice with the lens. This is a rose leaf from my rose bush. I like the way that the B&W conversion has brought out the veins in the leaf and adds a bit more detail to the subject." It's a cracking shot, and wins Nick a SanDisk 2GB CompactFlash card and 5-in-1 card reader, as well as a bundle pack containing Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 and Premiere Elements 7.
Our top prize winner this month is another regular entrant and a previous prize winner, the extremely talented Partha Pal, of West Bengal, India. As Partha describes, "This photograph was taken at a remote village of Birbhum, West Bengal, India. The Cow driven cart approaches home after a day's work." Partha used his Canon EOS 30D with an EF 17-40mm lens, and an exposure of 1/200th at f/10. I just love this photo for its simplicity, the utterly perfect composition and exposure, the atmosphere, just everything about it is right. I'm going to be using this one as my desktop for the next month, and Partha wins himself a SanDisk 2GB Extreme III CompactFlash card, a 5-in-1 card reader and a copy of Adobe Lightroom 2, which I sincerely hope he enjoys using.
Many thanks to all our entrants, and congratulations to Nazreen, Nick and Partha. Don't forget that the current round of our photography competition is open, with the theme of "The Open Road" and a closing date of May 31st 2009.
