Canon PowerShot G5

Outdoors, the G5 was superb with virtually no visible compression, resolution or sharpening artefacts to mention. Images were very smooth, yet highly detailed and impressively reproduced tones which other cameras failed to reveal. An excellent real-life result showing superb metering and image processing.

Fujifilm FinePix S602 Pro Zoom

Outdoor images reflected the detail captured in the resolution tests – ie somewhere between 4 and 5 megapixels using its internally-scaled 6 megapixel mode. Of concern though were higher levels of electronic noise than average, especially on flat areas like blue skies.

Nikon Coolpix 5400

Outdoors, the slight softness measured on the resolution test smeared the finest details captured by the best models, and images viewed at 1:1 revealed several diagonals suffering from greater jagged edges than average. That said, overall image quality was very pleasing.

Olympus CAMEDIA C-5050 Zoom

Outdoor images examined at 1:1 revealed worse than average jagged edges on diagonals and visible noise artefacts. Such noise wasn’t however visible even on large prints.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V1

Outdoors, the DSC-V1 delivered an excellent result with virtually no compression, resolution or sharpening artefacts to mention. Images were slightly soft compared to the best, but highly detailed none-the-less. A very good real-life result.
