Resolution Test Results High End

The images from left to right represent the vertical resolution test output from the Canon PowerShot G5, Fujifilm FinePix S602 Pro Zoom, Nikon Coolpix 5400, Olympus Camedia C-5050 Zoom and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V1.

The images from left to right represent the horizontal resolution test output from the Canon PowerShot G5, Fujifilm FinePix S602 Pro Zoom, Nikon Coolpix 5400, Olympus Camedia C-5050 Zoom and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V1.

Canon PowerShot G5

The Canon PowerShot G5 resolved 1350 lines per picture height in both the horizontal and vertical axes, which ranks it among the best of the 5 megapixel / 4X optical zoom cameras we tested. Images were very sharp, but without electronic sharpening artefacts – the G5 clearly has excellent optics.

Fujifilm FinePix S602 Pro Zoom

The Fujifilm FinePix S602 Pro Zoom resolved 1250 lines per picture height in both the horizontal and vertical axes, using its 6 megapixel internally scaled mode. This places it roughly between the resolving power of genuine 4 and 5 megapixel cameras.
The result is still higher than traditional 3 megapixel sensors though which resolve around 1050 lines at best. Considering the S602 Pro houses a sensor with 3 million effective photodiodes, the SuperCCD technology is doing a good job, but it’s important to be aware it’s not resolving 6 megapixels worth of detail, or even 5 for that matter.

Nikon Coolpix 5400

The Nikon Coolpix 5400 resolved 1300 lines per picture height in both the horizontal and vertical axes, which places it just below the best 5 megapixel / 4X zoom cameras we’ve tested. Slight softness smeared the ultimate detail.

Olympus CAMEDIA C-5050 Zoom

The Olympus CAMEDIA C-5050 Zoom resolved 1350 lines per picture height in both the horizontal and vertical axes, which ranks it among the best of the 5 megapixel cameras we tested – note the C-5050 only has a 3X optical zoom, but an above averagely bright focal ratio of f1.8~2.6. The resolution test was sharp, but of greater concern were noisy speckled artefacts visible on images viewed at 1:1.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V1

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V1 resolved 1350 lines per picture height in both the horizontal and vertical axes, which ranks it among the best of the 5 megapixel / 4X optical zoom cameras we tested.
