Best Dressed Characters in Gaming

Unlike games journalists, some video game characters know how to dress really well. Here are some of the most enviously stylish video game characters in existence, from mourning fathers to all-powerful sorceresses:

Booker DeWitt – BioShock Infinite

Just look at this guy. First of all, you’ve got the super-short jacket and its wide lapels, which in itself looks bulletproof. But it doesn’t end there: he goes the extra mile by comboing it with those shoulder straps and a wine-coloured neck scarf – a stroke of genius by the guys at Irrational. In fact, it’s criminal that you barely see Booker DeWitt throughout the entirety of BioShock Infinite. And let’s not talk about The Do – that has Hair-Game of the Year written all over it.

Faith – Mirror’s Edge

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst failed to live up to the hype, but the game’s protagonist, Faith, looks like she’s dressed for a 22nd-century Nike advert. Those white jeggings convey just the right amount of science fiction without going all weird, and the look is rounded off by her appearing to have parkoured through the un-tidied changing rooms of the local TK Maxx. The tattoo isn’t great, and is sure to become outdated pretty fast, but the black jacket, red detailing on her hands and strap is absolutely 100.

John Marston – Red Dead Redemption

John Marston is a great guy that was [SPOILER-ALERT] taken too soon. Look at his get-up, here: the layering is exceptional, with an impeccable attention to detail in almost every single aspect of his outfit. He looks like he could stroll from a dinner party straight into a shootout without a quick-change and no-one in either scenario would bat an eyelid. That diversity – and that exquisitely balanced coat/hat/beard combo – is what makes Marston not only one of the best-dressed videogame characters of the American Frontier, but of the entire 20th century.

Yennefer of Vengerberg – The Witcher

Yennefer, the impossibly powerful sorceress and long-time lover of Geralt. A main star of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Yen is clearly a member of the All Black Errythang movement. There are a couple of alternative outfits for her throughout the Witcher 3’s main adventure, but her go-to is an all-black cloak and corset. She looks like a complete badass, and developer CD Projekt Red doesn’t resort to over-sexualising her for the sake of male power fantasy. Good on you, boys.

Ezio Auditore – Assassin’s Creed

The star of not one but three mainline Assassin’s Creed games, Ezio has presented a wardrobe with varied outfits – some great, some good, some a bit iffy. And let’s just not talk about that mess that was AC: Revelations. In our mind, his best is what he wears in Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood – a white overcoat with intricate metal work on his shoulder, waist and wrists, detail that’s matched only by the stitchwork on the fabrics. Those wrists are cool enough in themselves, housing secret mechanically operated blades for stealth assassinations, and we’re presuming there’s easy-access to that famous Auditore libido.

Rafe & Nadine – Uncharted 4

“Talk about a power couple,” says Sully in the early hours of Uncharted 4. Privileged rich boy-turned-madman and main antagonist, Rafe Adler, and his mercenary powerhouse of a partner, Nadine, are the wardrobe stars of Uncharted 4. In this scene at a black-market auction in the Italian riviera, Rafe is somehow pulling off a white tuxedo with ease. Nadine, meanwhile, is wearing a simple red dress in which she she comfortably takes out Nathan Drake – she only had to take off her heels. The rest of the game isn’t as glamorously flaunting of its outfits, but this is a highlight.

Agent 47 – Hitman

The bald, absurdly chiseled head of one of gaming’s most recognisable characters, Agent 47 is the iconic killing machine in a suit. Impeccable tailoring and a real simplicity make his go-to outfit of black suit and red tie look excellent, even if it’s one you’d struggle to pull off yourself. In 2016’s Hitman reboot, he dons many other outfits when he’s out in the field, but his best look is the summer shirt/trouser combo for his trip to the idyllic coastal town of Sapienza. Subtle yet expertly executed.

The Boyle Sisters – Dishonored

Dishonored’s best mission – the infiltration of a regal masquerade held at one of the city’s most opulent estates – also features the game’s best-dressed trio. The Boyle sisters – Waverly, Esma and Lydia – are each a potential target for you to assassinate, and the game randomises them every time you play so you have to deduce which one is the actual target. What’s incredible about these three is their striking outfits, each remarkably similar but differing in colours; one is black, one is white and one is red. Their masks and headwear make for one of the most disturbing encounters in Dishonored, and are without doubt the centerpiece of the costume party.

Dragonslayer Ornstein – Dark Souls

Dragonslayer Ornstein is without doubt the best-dressed dude in all of Lordran. He far eclipses his partner, Executioner Smough, wearing full gold armour that perfectly compliments his tall slender frame. He’s also the owner of the coolest helmets in games, mimicking a lion-like creature with a huge ornate design. Its multi-layered intricacy never gets boring to look at, and the fact you could find this set in Dark Souls III is one of the game’s best secrets.
