WiFi Status can help out a bit here. It runs in the background monitoring your Wi-Fi connection and pops up a little alert to let you know when your phone’s Wi-Fi chip is turned on, but not connected to any network, giving you the option to turn it off and save on battery power. It’s a handy little app if you often find that you’ve forgotten to turn off Wi-Fi when you’re out and about.
